Key Advantages of the F-48 Series Field-mount SPD

Universal Field Compatibility & Non-intrusive Installation

The field-mount surge protector for industrial instruments offers universal compatibility with 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire field devices, with a parallel wiring design that delivers zero signal attenuation, preserving the measurement accuracy of critical process instruments. It supports standard threaded interfaces including 1/2" NPT, M20×1.5, with customizable options available, enabling direct mounting to spare cable entry ports on most field instruments without the need for specialized tools or process shutdowns.

IP67 Weatherproof & Rugged Industrial Build

Constructed from 304 stainless steel, the IP67 field-mount SPD features a fully sealed, corrosion-resistant housing with an IP67 ingress protection rating, making it suitable for deployment in extreme outdoor environments. It operates reliably across a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, with 5% to 95% relative humidity tolerance, delivering consistent performance in harsh industrial, mining, and oil and gas field applications.

Ultra-fast Lightning Surge Suppression Performance

With a 10kA nominal discharge current (8×20μs waveform) and 2.5kA impulse current (10×350μs), the lightning surge protection for field transmitters delivers robust mitigation of lightning-induced transients, limiting surge voltage to ≤1.0kV. It boasts ultra-fast response times of 1ns (line-to-line) and 100ns (line-to-ground), with a leakage current of <2μA at 48VDC maximum operating voltage, ensuring reliable protection without impacting instrument performance.

Compact Form Factor for Space-constrained Field Installations

With a compact 15mm diameter × 75mm length design, the SPD fits seamlessly into tight field installation spaces, making it ideal for retrofit projects and new installations alike, with no impact on existing instrument mounting or wiring layouts.

Industry Applications

The F-48 Series lightning surge protective device is purpose-built for high-lightning-risk industrial environments, including onshore and offshore oil and gas wellheads, mining operations, water and wastewater lift stations, power distribution substations, solar and wind renewable energy installations, and remote pipeline monitoring sites. It is ideal for protecting field-mounted pressure transmitters, electromagnetic flowmeters, level transmitters, valve positioners, and other critical 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire field instruments exposed to outdoor lightning hazards.

Installation, Operation & Modular Maintenance Guide

Installation

Mount the SPD directly to a spare threaded cable entry port on the protected field instrument using the compatible threaded adapter. Connect the SPD terminals in parallel with the instrument’s signal cables, ensuring a low-impedance ground connection to the instrument’s earth terminal or local plant ground. No modifications to existing instrument wiring or process shutdown are required for standard installations.

Operation

The SPD operates passively with no external power supply required, delivering continuous surge protection during normal instrument operation. Its fully sealed design requires no active monitoring during routine operation, with no impact on instrument signal transmission or measurement accuracy.

Maintenance

The IP67-sealed design requires minimal routine maintenance. Conduct bi-annual inspections to verify the integrity of the stainless steel housing, tightness of mounting connections, and continuity of the ground path. In the event of a major lightning event, replace the SPD unit with a new module to ensure ongoing protection, with no need to recalibrate or reconfigure the protected instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the F-48 Series SPD compatible with my existing field instruments?

Yes. The F-48 Series is universally compatible with all 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire field instruments, including transmitters and flowmeters, with a parallel wiring design that causes zero signal attenuation. It supports standard threaded interfaces to fit most instrument cable entries, with a compact design that enables direct mounting to spare cable entry ports without major modifications.

What level of lightning protection does the F-48 Series SPD provide?

The SPD delivers robust lightning protection with a 10kA nominal discharge current (8×20μs) and 2.5kA impulse current (10×350μs), limiting surge voltage to ≤1.0kV. Its ultra-fast 1ns response time ensures immediate suppression of lightning-induced transients, protecting sensitive field instruments from costly damage and unplanned downtime.
